CLG:  Opening Bell: Apples, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Arugula!

Good afternoon,
We only have 2 markets before Thanksgiving so plan your Thanksgiving meal soon. Lots of great products for your table, as well as gifts for your friends and neighbors.

It was 39 degrees when I got up at 3am to make candied jalapenos this morning! Chilly nights mean winter is coming soon. My first thought, even before I started the coffee pot, was “Do we have enough purple hull peas in the freezer?” For kids, winter means snow days and sledding. For me, it means enjoying all the comfort foods to keep me warm inside when it’s cold outside. A pot of purple hull peas cooking on the wood stove, seasoned with a bit of bacon, smoked jalapenos, and Beaverfork Blend will make the dreariest of winter days a whole lot brighter! If you want your own stash of peas, you better get them before I do!!!

From Tammy Sue’s Critters:
We are having a Christmas Open House for our customers on November 28, from 10-2. There is no charge for this event. We will be fully decorated, have a fire in the fire pit, have light refreshments and the critters will all be excited! Our address is 4 Cheyenne Tr. North Little Rock, 72120.

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!

Have a great week!
Steve

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open

Have you seen the market lately? There are some beautiful, tasty and curious products available. We have some funky gourds, deep purple sweet peppers, orange tumeric, spicy cheese, and lavender soaps. Load up on goodness; the market is open!

Food Label Part II

Last week, I gave a brief description about the difference between conventional and organic labels. Today, I want to explain the nuances in certified and non-certified organic labels. The two major organic certifications are USDA Certified Organic and Certified Naturally Grown (CNG). You will notice that we also have a description on our growers page that is “No Chemicals.” Why all the differences? Here is a brief explanation.

When the USDA created the Certified Organic label, it required all growers who use the word “organic” to be certified. Consequently, growers are not allowed to use the word if they are not certified, OR they make less than $5,000 a year in sales. USDA Certified growers must go through a costly and extensive process to become certified and are inspected on a regular basis. All USDA certified products cannot use synthetics in their operation, nor have used synthetics in the past few years (often three years). Also, all USDA certified organic products cannot use GMO ingredients.

Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) was a reaction to USDA certification back in 2002 when growers could no longer use the word organic unless through the USDA. Put succinctly, USDA certification can be very expensive and often fits better with larger scaled operations. CNG has the same regulations as USDA with a few differences. CNG is a peer-reviewed system where farmers inspect other farms. These inspectors are allowed to give advice during the inspection (unlike the USDA). Also, all the information of the farms application and inspections are available to the public on CNG’s website: http://www.cngfarming.org/. CNG is much cheaper for small-scale growers and is based on annual donations from its members.

Finally, non-certified organic growers who gross less than $5,000 can use the word organic, but must maintain the same basic standards as the USDA certification. For other non-certified organic growers, we offer the “No Chemicals” description so that they may provide a more nuanced description of their practices on their grower pages.

Overall, the basic division revolves around the use of synthetics. If a grower uses them in their operation, they cannot describe their produce as organic or “No Chemicals.” Our growers are a diverse group of wonderful people with varying practices. However, they are all open and transparent and welcome communication with their customers.

ALFN’s goal is to equip you to make well-informed decisions that energize and cultivate our local foodshed. As always, we welcome further questions and comments in this pursuit.

Thanks

Stones River Market:  Time to Order Local Food - New Products and a Ginger Update

Stones River Market

How to contact us:
Our Website: stonesriver.locallygrown.net
On Facebook: www.facebook.com/StonesRiverMarket
On Wednesdays: Here’s a map.

Market News

The Market is back open this morning with plenty of locally grown and made products. Apple season will be ending soon but at this time Rainbow Hill Farm still has several varieties available. Get your supply before they are gone.

If you came to Market last week, Rod with Double Star Bar Farms brought samples of his focaccia and pain a l’ancienne. This week he has added an herb oil focaccia, a fruited focaccia (Wow, is this a great breakfast item!) and a “plain” focaccia (just olive oil and sea salt as a topping). He has also added an olive loaf (large and small). Finally, he has the mini baguettes (pain a l’ancienne) listed.

Rocky Glade Farm sends us this note:

… all of the ginger has been dug, so this truly is the last week for it and galangal. We are offering a larger 3 lb bulk pack for 20.00 which is quite a savings over the regular price. Ginger freezes well for use during cold and flu season or to freeze in quantities to add to smoothies or juicing.

Linda with Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this message:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is offering a fabric-lined basket filled with three herb plants of your choice, each in its own 4" pot. These pretty baskets will make great Thanksgiving decorations or hostess gifts. Order your basket for delivery now, or preorder for Thanksgiving delivery. Herbs included will be those commonly used in baking and cooking, a great addition to any kitchen. Specify your preference of herbs from this list: lemon balm; orange, pineapple, apple, chocolate, spearmint, or grapefruit mint; Greek or variegated oregano; silver-edged, English, common, variegated lemon, citrus, or lime thyme. Basket #1 is approximately 8-9" round with a handle, but may be different from the picture on the market. Pattern of fabric may vary, but will be fall/Thanksgiving themed.

From Sean with Nuance Coffee and Tea:

Nuance Coffee & Tea has adding several new teas to our offerings. We will be adding even more in the next two weeks. Look For the word NEW, in the description of the tea, to see what we have recently added for the Fall and Winter seasons. Also, due to customer demand, we have changed the size of all teas, from a 4 oz. bag, to a 2 oz. bag. This allows our customers to chose more than one tea, at a time, while still keeping our prices as low as possible. This is great if you want to give multiple teas, as gifts, or just try a variety of the different teas we offer. All prices have been leveled at $5.00 / 2 oz. pouch which is the best value that you will find anywhere. Thank you and, as always, “Enjoy”!

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too!

I am taking a break from recipes. Look for them to return soon.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
