Cedar Grove Farm:  End of year greetings

Dear Friends of Cedar Grove Farm,

Several weeks ago you received a notice that the Cedar Grove Farm CSA would be closing down this year with the opportunity to spend remaining balances at the final Saturday morning Athens Farmers Markets. Yesterday was the end of the 2014 Athens Farmers Market season; and, we are, as promised, prepared to refund all monies left in your accounts.

As an alternative, since we are returning to the Saturday morning Market next season, we would like to offer you the option of leaving your accounts open and spending the balance at the Cedar Grove Farm booth at the 2015 Athens Farmers Market. We regret not being able to offer the CSA service next year, but we still would like very much to continue sharing our harvest.

Please, if you have not already done so, let us know if you wish to receive your refund or prefer to keep your accounts active for the Athens Farmers Market beginning again in April 2015. If you have already requested a refund, your check will be mailed tomorrow, Monday, Dec. 22, 2014.

Whatever is your decision, we want to give our sincerest thanks for your support and to wish you a wonderful Christmas holiday and Happy New Year.

Best regards from all of us at Cedar Grove Farm.

Athens Locally Grown:  ALG Reminder: We are closed this week!

Hi there! This is just a reminder that Athens Locally Grown will be closed this week to allow us all to celebrate Christmas and all the other holidays occurring this week.

Since Thursday of next week is New Year’s Day, a terrible day to try to hold a market, we’re going to try something a little different. We’ll be moving next week’s pickup to TUESDAY, December 30, from 4:30 to 8pm at Ben’s Bikes. The time and place will stay the same — only the day will change. I’m planning on opening the website for you at noon on Friday, December 26th, and giving you through Sunday night to get your order in. I’ll be sending you a reminder on Friday, of course.

In the meantime, you can help bring a wonderful local food related event to Athens. A recent episode of the Colbert Report hosted Eva Longoria, actress and activist, speaking about the movie “Food Chains”, for which she served as an executive producer. The film explores the Fair Food campaign of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and has been getting a lot of press. Athenian Dr. Shane Hamilton appears in the film as a talking head, along with Eva and Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation). For anyone with even a passing interest in modern food systems, economic inequality, social justice, women’s rights, or activism, this is a film worth seeing.

And you can see it! CINE will be screening the film at 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 14th, to be followed by a short Q&A with Dr. Hilda Kurtz (Geography), Dr. Cecilia Herles (Women’s Studies), and Dr. Shane Hamilton (History). But because the film is being “crowdfunded,” anyone who wants to see the film to reserve a ticket today. If a minimum threshold of reservations aren’t made, the film doesn’t screen.

You can reserve your ticket at (and share with friends, colleagues, and fellow food folks) the following link: https://www.tugg.com/events/12322.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on TUESDAY, December 30, at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Merry Christmas week!

Don’t forget to place your order on Manchester Locally Grown market by this week’s closing time of noon on Monday for delivery fresh from local farms on Tuesday.

Remember that we are a year-round market, not subject to seasonal closings like the local farm stands. You will find great Christmas gifts here – honey, jellies & jams, herbal & handmade products, & more – as well as winter vegetables, eggs, and baked goods. And gift certificates are available in any denomination. Give the gift of good healthy eating this Christmas!

Pickup of your order will be at Square Books, 113 E. Main St, Manchester, from 3:00-4:30 on Tuesday. We can also hold your order in the refrigerator till Wednesday morning, if that’s more convenient for you. Just call (931) 273-9708 if you prefer to utilize this free service. Square Books will not be open on Wednesday, but I will be glad to meet you.

Thanks for your orders last week! Please encourage your local friends and family to shop at our year-round market and support local farmers!

Blessings,
Linda
