Market News

Hard to believe we are already in the second week of December. The Market opens again with its variety of locally grown and made products.

The farmers and producers have provided me with the news this week.

Nuance Coffee & Tea has added several new teas to their offerings this week. They are: Se Chung Oolong, Sencha Kakagawa green tea, Double Berry Oolong, Fuji Apple Spice Sencha green tea, Kenya Changoi Lion’s Mane black tea, and Apple Spice Rooibos herbal. Enjoy!

“Season” Greetings from Chef Jenny. The Seeds of Success are back on the market this week with gifts for the holiday season. The Original Seasoning and Cinna-Spice jars come with a recipe card and an attractive bag. There is also the Holiday Snack Pack with Fruitcake and Sweet & Salty mix that comes tied with a festive ribbon. These are great gift for friends, family, teachers, and neighbors.

White City Produce and Greenhouse has added Christmas cactus and fruit baskets.

Wedge Oak Farm has added a couple of varieties of turkey sausage made from their pasture raised turkeys.

West Wind Farms has restocked many of their offerings of beef

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! If you have created a dish and want to share with everyone, please send it to me.

The recipe this week came to me from an email I received using food still is season. Simply in Season by Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert. This book can be purchased from amazon.com.

Tish and I tried it earlier in the week. Tish thought it needed a few more potatoes and did add milk in place of some of the water.

Kale Potato Soup

What you’ll need:
1 large bunch of kale, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
1 large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 large potatoes or sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
5 cups vegetable broth (or 5 cups water with vegetable bouillon)*

Steam kale and set aside. Melt butter in a large stock pot. Add garlic and onion and saute until golden. Add potatoes and broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until potatoes are soft. Add steamed kale, then let cool a bit. Puree in batches in a blender until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.

*If you like a creamier soup, you can substitute some of the water out for milk.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

John

    Farm to Table Recipes

Sautéed Greens with Pine Nuts and Raisins Recipe
    Yield: Serves 2,

    INGREDIENTS
    1/4 cup pine nuts
    2 Tbsp olive oil
    4 garlic cloves, minced
    1/4 cup golden raisins
1 bunch kale, chard, collards, or turnip greens, etc., about 1 pound, tough stem centers removed (if any) and discarded, greens chopped
1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Roughly 1/2 cup dry white wine or water
    Salt and pepper to taste
    METHOD
1 Heat a large sauté pan hot on medium-high heat and add the pine nuts. Toast until fragrant and begin to brown…pine nuts burn easily. Stir or toss the nuts frequently. Once they are toasted, remove from pan and set aside.
2 Add the olive oil to the pan and swirl it around. Add the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds; the pan should already be hot, so it won’t take long for the garlic to begin to brown. Add back the pine nuts, add the raisins and the greens and mix well. Sauté, stirring often, until the greens wilt and begin to give up some of their water, anywhere from 1-2 minutes for spinach to 4-5 minutes for collards or kale.
3 Sprinkle salt and red pepper flakes on the greens. Add the white wine (can substitute water)—use a little more wine if you are cooking collards, a little less if you are cooking spinach. Toss to combine and let the liquid boil away, remove from heat. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Champaign, OH:  Local Thoughts For A Local Holiday

Happy Saturday morning, local market customers!!

Your market manager is about to head down to her moonlighting position of Santa Land merry maker, but before I head out, I wanted to share a holiday write up by our own Charlene…

She summed up exactly how we feel at this little local market of love. The love of local can totally extend into the gift giving season!! In fact, I hear more and more people say that they are keeping it local, this year. When keeping it local, make sure to look at our market. You can shop for everyone on your list, right here, right now…

Think about it as you read…

And, the gift giving can extend to gift certificates to our little market, for gifts that can last throughout…

Also…during this busy, hustle and bustle month of fun, don’t forget that you still need your veggies for staying healthy…Don’t forget to remember that both End Of The Road Farms AND CRSI/Strive are our go-to year round veggie people!!

Ok…I leave you know in a haze of coffee, Christmas tunes, and good cheer as I rush off to Santa Land…

Oh, and just FYI, today’s Santa will be someone very familiar to us all…can we give our very own Paul Wadsmith a HUGE thank you?? Come downtown, today, to catch him in action!!

    Peace and Love,
    Cosmic Pam
