Thank you for doing your part in helping us work toward that goal.

Our offerings are getting fewer, but we still have some good stuff for you this week. Blessings to you all for a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

The Market returns to regular operations after our break last week. Hard to believe but the new year arrives this week. We have plenty of products available for your New Years’ Day gatherings.

We have several producers extending their break. They include Chef Jenny, JourneyWorks Community Garden, Rainbow Hill Farm, The Blue Porch and White City Produce and Greenhouse. Watch for their return soon.

Farrar Farms is running a special this week.

Buy one pound of Lynchburg Beef Chorizo from Farrar Farm, get a second pound for half price. Our Chorizo is slightly spicy, with no MSG or preservatives. And, as always, our beef is hormone, antibiotic, and steroid free.

Other items of interest include:

Flying S Farms introduced spiced apple butter.

There are plenty of eggs available this week from Flying S Farms, Vaughn Brothers Farm, Wedge Oak Farm and West Wind Farms.

Produce is also available from Erdmann Farm, Ferris Family Farm, Frontier Family Farm, and Rocky Glade Farm.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open

ALFN Members,

The market is open. Even after the first day of winter, the market is full of fresh produce. From organic spinach to spaghetti squash, there is enough diversity in our local market to fill the bulk of your meal plans throughout the whole week.

UPDATE

Website Product Categories

We will be making a small change to the categories on the left side of the market website beginning next week. Our aim has been to simplify categories and provide specific sub-categories under “Locally Produced Goods.” Market organization will be food-based with the “Locally Produced Goods” containing all sub-categories for added-value products. You will still be able to search for items, but we believe this small change in category organization will make the shopping experience more intuitive.

Community Market Day

We have a few new projects we are excited to implement in 2016. Starting in January, we will begin having a once a month “Community Market Day.” Every last Saturday of the month, we will celebrate local ingenuity by inviting members to share skills, by inviting a couple of our growers to highlight their products, and by inviting other local artists to present their work. We hope these Community Market Days will be an enjoyable time where ALFN members can linger a bit and, for example, converse with their growers, taste a new smoothie mix or new coffee roast, listen to some local tunes, or take a quick mini-workshop on fermenting vegetables, or natural dyeing techniques. In other words, Community Market Day will be whatever YOU want to share with our larger ALFN community. Our first Community Market Day will be January 30th. If you are interested in sharing a skill, whether it be culinary or craft, please email me. Closer to the date, I will advertise what we will be doing that day. For know, brainstorm what you might enjoy sharing and mark January 30th for Community Market Day. Also, if you are a musician or know musicians who would be interested in playing for an hour or two, please contact me. Piano, tuba, guitar, flute or juice harp—all are welcome to play. Amateur, professional, young or old—all are welcome to play!

Bulk Grains/Flour Survey

Finally, be looking for a survey in the next couple of weeks. We have another project up our sleeves to increase the selection of products on ALFN’s market. We hope to provide access to more regional grains for members who are looking for bulk grains or flours that can be organic and/or non-GMO. We will disperse a survey at the beginning of January to gather data and interest. Our goal is to keep working for ALFN to be a one-stop shop for members that continues to expand the quality and depth of our local economy.

Stay Tuned!!!

Market News

I’w got to say, I’ve always wondered how it must feel for those who celebrate Christmas in Australia, where the holiday falls in the middle of summer. I’ve had to turn the A/C on in the house to keep the pets happy, and have gotten the shorts and thin T-shirts back out of the closet. All of the fruit trees in my neighborhood are in full bloom, too. It’s really pretty strange.

Since Thursday is New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Eve is a bad day to hold a farmers market, this week we are holding a special ALG pickup day on WEDNESDAY December 30. I’ve opened the website for you now, and you have through Monday night to get your orders in. Then on WEDNESDAY, we’ll have pickups from 4:30 until 8pm, and just pretend like it’s Thursday. Some of our growers are taking the week off, so the selection is a little less than usual, but most of them have told me they’ll have things that need harvested (and eggs that need collecting, etc.), and you’ll find all that now on the website.

I’ve relaxed the deadlines for the growers this week, so if you order early you may want to check back on Monday to see if anything interested has gotten added to the listings by tardy growers. It’s always ok to place multiple orders, and we’ll combine them for you when you arrive to get them.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it! You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on WEDNESDAY at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
