CSA Farmers Market:  UNFORTUNATE STRAWBERRY HARVEST

We just got the news that there will not be enough strawberries for us this year.

While all looked well on the surface, when it came time to start picking they discovered that the fruit set was just not there – a situation not obvious until you start looking closely underneath the leaves of the plant – and so there would not be enough berries to go around this year. This includes all of Ware farms outside orders and includes his wholesale accounts, not just us.

As I told someone who wanted to order but wanted a guarantee that they would get berries, there is no such thing as an absolute guarantee when talking about farm harvests. There are just too many variables, and sooner or later reduced or non-existent crop harvest happens to all farmers, for one crop or another (last year many farms had no tomatoes, due to tomato blight.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.

Champaign, OH:  Suite Madam Blue

Suite Madame Blue, gaze in your looking glass…
You’re not a child anymore…
Suite Madame Blue, the future is all but past…
Dressed in your jewels, you made your own rules…
You conquered the world and more…
(Suite Madam Blue-Styx)

So, I had a serious Styx addiction way, way back in the day. Freshman year in high school can pretty much be summed up, for me, by Styx. And, The Rolling Stones, and The Grateful Dead. But Styx…their music could transport. And, yes, like many girls, I was going to be Tommy Shaw’s girlfriend.

Anyway, recently, my mother gave me a few boxes that came from the attic of our West End house. One of them had ancient little drawings that my grandmother put into book form, and had her handwriting on each book depicting the year with my name. I almost cried just seeing her handwriting.

Another box had a bunch of cassettes and 8 track tapes. Some of the cassettes were mix tapes with years written on the covers. While going through the tapes, I found one with STYX written in marker. And, since you know my love of music, and my love of vintage, you just know that I have a cassette deck in one of my stereo systems. I popped this tape in, and let it play until it hit on this song.

I forgot how much love I had for this song. I started to remember the lyrics, and then the lyrics jumped out at me, reminding me of this little local market of love…

The beginning lyrics that I chose for this Weblog, spoke to me because we are no longer the child, no longer the young new kid. Our market has grown in the past four years, gained a presence that overcame the naysayers or the negative vibes that came with beginning something new. Something untried. Something unproven. We dressed our little market up, we marched it around, we sang it’s praises, we promoted, we conquered.

Suite Madame Blue gives way to our Suite Little Local Market of Love…we are a market of AMAZING proportions! So proud to be a part of the community. So proud to have such a local following.

Tonight, I open the market…I urge you to get to know us, revisit us, or continue to show us the love that you do on a weekly basis.

And, a quick note that I will be reminding you of in the next week…just as this market has grown, conquered, and held it’s own, we, your managers, have been watching, and adjusting when we feel it’s needed.

Beginning with Thursday’s pick up, we will now end pick up at 6pm instead of 6:30 pm*** This is really the first time that we have changed anything to the market, but after keeping records, we feel that the 6-6:30 time zone is no longer needed. So…make note…Customer Pick Up is from 4:30-6pm!!! Vendor Drop Off remains the same!!

Thank you for always supporting us, our little local market of love, and the community!!

Peace, Love, and Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

CSA Farmers Market:  Growing Season Update July 20, Recipe

  • Limited quantities of flavorful tomatoes are soon to be harvested. More lettuce, peppers and cucumbers will be available soon.
  • Our cut hay was rained on for a couple days. Fortunately we had a couple of dry days with a steady wind. Once raked, the hay dried out enough to put into round bales. Homegrown and all natural is best for our herds, and for us.
  • Michigan weather provides a great growing environment for many species of herbs. Everything from dill to sage and mint grow well here. This is great news for the adventurous cooks and exotic eaters. We recommend that you try a new herb every so often. They provide flavor and a wide variety of complex nutrients, not otherwise found in a regular diet!

Farmer Logic: “With the winds and rains come weeds, humid days, and cool nights. Enjoy the soft soaked beds, get out and pull the weeds.”

What’s up with the Salmon?
Back in Time Farm will be supplying Alaskan Wild Caught salmon through his son, Running Wild Alaskan Seafood, LLC.
This deliciously fresh salmon is carefully selected directly from the fishermen’s nets from the cold Alaskan waters before it ever enters the ship’s hold. Only the best is chosen to become part of " Running Wild Alaskan Seafood’s" premium offerings. The fish is immediately bled and iced down before making the short boat ride to the processor located in Homer, Alaska. Here it is quickly processed and flash frozen (to ensure freshness) then packed into coolers for the overnight trip to Georgia. This is the freshest salmon available without going to Alaska to catch it yourself. Red Sockeye salmon is packed with flavor and nutrition.
We are within a week or so of having this salmon at our very own market! The packages will be 8 ounces and sell for $9.50 a pack.
I have emailed all those interested that emailed me and I will be making sure that when they place their orders, they have priority. But there will be enough for Market sales. This will be the first catch and then we are hoping for a second catch 3 weeks later, but that isn’t guaranteed yet.
So watch for the email to buy coming in about a week or two.

As Always….

Please share with friends and family about us so that we can give more people the opportunity to buy and eat healthy! Local farmers need our support to keep providing us with all the fresh foods! If we don’t give them enough business, it’s hard for them to continue to deliver to us. Please let’s not let that happen! Tell your friends about us so we can keep the Growers supported as this is how they make their living.

Thank you to all of you who support Gwinnett Locally Grown!

If there is something you’d like to see in the Market, please let me know! I would love your input!

Remember…
The Market is extending their hours! The Market will now be open from 4:00 to 7:00pm!
Having said that, if you place an order with us, PLEASE remember to pick it up on Tuesday. As I am so grateful for your orders, I also have a family at home waiting on me too! We cannot hold orders, especially cold items due to limited refrigeration space, so please be courteous and come for your order.

A NOTE ABOUT PEACHES – Organic peaches do not have any synthetic fungicide or petroleum-based wax to extend their naturally short shelf-life. We deliver them slightly firm, and they soften extremely quickly, so prepare to eat or process them within about two days of delivery.

LEILANI’S GARDENS

Leilani’s began in 1997 as a small Garden Center near downtown Dawsonville. We quickly outgrew our space and relocated to our present site on Hwy 53 in 2001. From the very beginning Leilani’s has been an all-natural grower of quality produce and herb, vegetable, and fruit plants. We are your local source for great-tasting, wholesome, nutritious produce. Leilani’s follow the strict organic standards of Certified Naturally Grown and are proud to display their symbol of quality.

If great-tasting, all-natural locally-grown produce is your thing, Leilani’s is your kind of place. Organic tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, and beans are just a little of what we have to offer from late Spring to Fall, and lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots, and more are available in the cooler seasons. With the use of a heated greenhouse and several cold frames Leilani’s is able to grow produce year round, because after all, you have to eat year-round anyway, so why shouldn’t you eat produce that’s fresh, nutritious, and delicious year-round?

Look for the following produce offered from Leilani’s this week under the “vegetables” tab on the market:
ON SALE – Cherry Sun Gold Tomatoes for $ 3.00 normally $4.00 – These little gems are amazingly sweet and delicious!

Also available:
Heirloom tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini- regular and eight ball, bell peppers all colors, Beans- green and purple

Leilani’s also offers a selection of plants from their nursery, check under the "plants’ tab on the market. Currently they are selling flowering plants and some herbs. Throughout the year you can find seasonal plants to purchase for your yard or garden.

Other Market Highlights This Week…
Welcome Jeanne Henkel, our youngest budding farm girl, she has harvested wild Chanterelle Mushrooms this week to sell on the market.
